You can train commercial models on this data, and the consent form says so in those words.
This is the part clinical video usually cannot offer. Video scraped from the internet carries no consent at all, and public surgical corpora are typically released for research use only. Here commercial development is named outright in the list of permitted uses a patient signs – before the camera is switched on.

Model training is enumerated, not inferred
The same permitted-use list opens with “Internal research, annotation, and AI model development.” Training a model on this corpus is not a reading we argued our way to – it is written on the form the subject signed.
No second permission to chase
The form states it twice: once de-identified and shared, the data “may continue to be used for future research or commercial development without additional consent.” Your pipeline does not stall while someone re-consents a patient from two years ago.
No claim on what you build
The subject separately initials that they “will not receive financial compensation or a share of profits from products or services that may be developed using the de-identified data.” The revenue question is closed at the source, in writing.

Compliance
What scraped-video datasets cannot offer.
Every recording is prospective, consented and IRB-overseen – and the consent explicitly covers commercial development and licensing – a right most academic clinical datasets cannot grant.
- ✓WCG IRB Protocol #20261848 – approved 2026-06-22, valid through 2027-05-29, annual continuing review. Four approved recording locations.
- ✓Reviewed in substance, not rubber-stamped – WCG placed the submission on hold and queried it in writing: sponsor structure, the scope of the HIPAA waiver, the multi-site design, redline rounds on the consent form, and the investigator's financial interest – disclosed at $0 study-specific compensation, the study fully self-funded. Every answer is on file with the IRB; approval followed on 2026-06-22.
- ✓Prospective per-subject written informed consent – signed before recording begins, not a retrospective waiver applied afterwards. The permitted-use list is quoted in full above.
- ✓De-identified to the HIPAA Safe Harbor standard (45 CFR §164.514(b)(2)) – compliance documented per case after a frame-by-frame visual audit, and PI sign-off precedes every external release. California Experimental Subject's Bill of Rights signed per subject; all recorded parties consent to audio recording.
- ✓De-identification by excision – in the licensed master, identifying passages are cut, not blurred. One 45-second region carries an opaque panel fill, disclosed in the release notes; everywhere else, what the model sees is what the camera saw.
- ✓DUA required for the licensed corpus. Compliance summary available on request.

Public-dataset figures: 2024 systematic review of publicly available dental imaging datasets. Video hours count the three annotated cases only – recorded volume is far larger.
